1.Description

TORAJIgel8816isheat-stable oleo gels for cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations. They are prepared fromTORAJIneutral inorganic gelling agents.

TORAJIGel 8816is comprised ofCaprylic/Capric Triglyceride,organically-modified montmorillonite andDextrin Palmitate, acting as gelling agent.

3. Properties

TORAJIgel8816hasa soft,pastyconsistency similarto petrolatum.TORAJIgel8816isextremely heat-stable and does not melt, even at temperatures of 100 ��C.

TORAJIgel8816ischemically neutral, oxidation-resistant and have a long shelf life. Rancidity problemsdonotoccurbecause onlysaturatedfatty acidsarepresent.TORAJIgel8816 ismiscible with all oils, fats, waxes and W/O emulsifiers (s. manufacturing guidelines).

TORAJIgel8816isinsoluble in water and are soluble in ethylalcohol, acetone and diethylether,whereby a solid residue of montmorillonite remains (Tip: this insoluble residue must beseparated at some analytical examinations, because it could prevent attaining the correct values).

TORAJIgel8816are very compatible with the skin because they does not inhibit the skin respiration. Because of the spreadabilityTORAJIand the lamellate structure of the organophilic gel-former,TORAJIgel8816can easily be disposited on the skin. The skin becomes soft and velvety, without a greasy after-feel.

TORAJIgel8816promote the resorption of active ingredients and other skin care raw materials.

4. Applications

Because of their high thermal stabilityTORAJIgel8816isrecommended for use as consistency regulators in cosmetical and pharmaceutical preparations where it is important to maintain viscosity over a wide temperature range (e.g. tropical-resistant ointments, UV protection creams). W/O emulsions withTORAJIgel8816show no phase separation even after short heating up to 90 ��C.

W/O emulsions withTORAJIgels impart a distinctive cooling effect.

5. Manufacturing Guidelines

Because the very stableTORAJIgel8816cannot be melted, the additional fats, oils, waxes or paraffin hydrocarbons and emulsifiers being used in the formulations must be dispersed in the gels homogeneously at 70 - 80 ��C. The aqueous phase is then heated up to the same

temperature and emulsified using hi-speed agitators, and simultaneously or afterwords used homogenized.

The preparation of stable water-in-oil-emulsions of different consistency is possible with theTORAJIgel8816, using very few ingredients. Complicated formulations can be substantially simplidied. The following example of a soft W/O cream consits only of four ingredients:

The oil component of this basic formulation, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceridecan be replaced by other substances such as vegetable oil, fatty alcohol, isopropyl fatty acid ester, mineral oil or petrolatum, depending upon the desired consistency or function.

6. Toxicology

TORAJI Gel8816respectively their components, are non-toxic and skin compatible. Irritation or sensitization has not been observed.

Acute oral toxicity: LD50(mouse) > 5000 mg/kg body weight

Mucosa compatibility (Draize-Eye test): No irritation of the cornea and iris.

7. Packaging

Solid mass in plastic containers of5kgand20kgnet.

8. Storage and Shelf Life

In tightly closed containers, below 25 ��C, protected from moisture and light. Under these conditions the shelf life ofTORAJIgel8816is at least three years.
